Shan Zha Hawthorn Fr. Crataegi
Properties: sour sweet slightly warm
Channels: Spleen Stomach Liver
Functions: Promotes digestion for overeating
Reduces masses for tumors and fibroids, abdominal masses, hernia
Lowers cholesterols, blood pressure and increases strength of heart muscle contraction.
Stops diarrhea due to over-eating (Jiao shan zha/charred)
Reduces abdominal pain from parasites or post-partum.
Dosage in decoction: 10-15 g usually; 30-60 g, up to 100g for high blood pressure and coronary heart disease
Caution: Use charred fruit if pregnant or with acid reflux.
Use with care if already taking medications for the heart.
Phamacology: Procyanids from Crataegus oxycantha are Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibitors.
ACE inhibition leads to decreased hypertension by decreasing blood volume and peripheral resistance.
Hawthorn also inhibits Phosphodiesterase leading to increase in CO and decreased lactic acid,
making it useful for Congestive Heart Failure and Angina.
